Every portrait here began as a conversation. People were guarded at first, and almost every time we ended up laughing.

At the end, I asked each person a question and made their picture right after they answered. Nearly all of them said the same thing: that it simply felt good to be spoken to, and heard, without judgment. These are the guests of Andre House in Phoenix, people experiencing homelessness who have become part of a community that holds them with dignity. Look at the eyes, the lines, the way a smile sits in a face that has carried a lot. That is the whole point.
